Paul Thorn
June 4, 2022 at 12:00:00 AM
8:00 PM
12:00 AM
Reeves Theater : 129 W. Main St, Elkin
Paul Thorn has created an innovative and impressive career, pleasing crowds with his muscular brand of roots music – bluesy, rocking and thoroughly Southern American, yet also speaking universal truths. Among those who value originality, inspiration, eccentricity and character – as well as talent that hovers somewhere on the outskirts of genius, the story of Paul Thorn is already familiar. Born in Tupelo, Mississippi, raised among the same spirits (and some of the actual people) who nurtured the young Elvis generations before, Paul Thorn has rambled down back roads and jumped out of airplanes, worked for years in a furniture factory, battled four-time world champion boxer Roberto Duran on national television, performed on stages with Bonnie Raitt, Mark Knopfler, Sting, and John Prine among many others, and made some of the most emotionally restless yet fully accessible music of our time. He’s also appeared on major television shows, received numerous National Public Radio features and charted multiple times on the Billboard Top 100 and Americana Radio Charts.

RG Absher, for entertainment, will be playing colonial music on his fiddle and telling history and stories of the Overmountain Victory Trail that the David Allen History Marker sits on. We'll have several tables set up with 18th century items as well as iron ore slag that's been found in the waters of Big Elkin Creek from David Allen's 18th Century Iron works.
Re-enactors be dressed in 18th century clothes that would have been worn during the time that the Jonesville and Elkin areas were known as Allen's Settlement.
This will be a "low impact" visitor site for those with kids or non-hikers or those who came just to shop our downtown stores. We can educate the visitors about the historic trail that Elkin has to offer. For those who are unfamiliar with the Muster Field or the Overmountain Victory Trail section that runs through this part of Elkin there will a few of us who can take short hikes to point out this unique trail that our community offers.

Saturday, June 4, 2022
3:00 PM
11:00 AM
Yadkin Valley Heritage & Trails Visitor Center: 257 Standard St., Elkin
7 Steps to a Backyard Rain Garden
Rain Gardens are a delightful solution to standing water problems in your yard and excessive runoff to the storm drain. A rain garden is typically a shallow depression that is planted with deep-rooted native plants and grasses. The garden holds the water for a short time allowing it to be absorbed into the soil. Plants are selected based on their ability to withstand the extremes of moisture and concentrations of nutrients. And there is no reason your rain garden cannot do double duty as a pollinator friendly habitat. Learn 7 easy steps to building your own rain garden.
Bio
Wendi Hartup has educated the public about stormwater issues and solutions for 16 years in North Carolina. She has conducted national webinars and regional hands-on train-the-trainer workshops; co-developed the statewide, NC State Extension Rain Garden Certification program for landscapers with a complimentary how to guide for installing rain gardens; developed the statewide, NC State Extension Backyard Stream Repair program with a complimentary citizen guide for small-scale solutions; and provided hands-on experiential learning for more than 2150 volunteers to install 63 rain gardens, 187 cisterns and stabilize 6303 linear feet of streambank. As the Town of Kernersville Stormwater Manager, she works to find ways to improve water quality and acquired a $400,000 grant for a stream restoration at Ivey Redmon Sports Complex that was completed in May. She moonlights on the side designing rain gardens. Wendi has a master’s in fisheries conservation and bachelor’s in marine biology.
